Making Strides

This morning I participated in my first (but not last) walk to support the fight against breast cancer.  This disease has not affected me personally (or anyone I know, at least I don’t think it has) but it was still inspiring to be part of.

It was reported that there were about 50,000 walkers there this morning!

I got involved with this ACS Making Strides walk due to my hotel.  We joined the corporate team at the end of last month and got everything organized very quickly.  But we all enjoyed it so much that we are already planning on making this a yearly thing.  The corporate team was started a few months ago and they organized shirts, tattoos (temporary of course), those stretchy bands and balloons for us all.  They even had breakfast and water waiting for us!  With all of the fundraising everyone did we ended up being the #3 company in the whole walk!

If you remember last time I was working on decorating a bra for my GM to wear.  You can see the finished product above.  It turned out that the bra challenge was issued by multiple male members in my corporation so luckily he wasn’t the only guy wearing a bra.

I have to say that I was very impressed with this walk.  The organizers, volunteers and police did a wonderful job of making a safe, entertaining and well marked route.  At every intersection there were barricades and police to block traffic.  There were also several water stations throughout so that no one got dehydrated.  In Florida with the walk starting at 9am this is very important.  It was over 80 degrees by the time we got started.  The walk organizers also set up random music stations with live performers along the route.  There was a nice variety of music and at a good volume so that the local residents were not disturbed.  All in all it was a great start to the day!

Week of Pink

Did you know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month?  Well, incase you didn’t get the memo: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!!

In support of this my hotel signed up to participate in the ACS (American Cancer Society) Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Orlando (you can find an event near you here).  To provide extra incentive my GM issued a challenge to the team members.  If we can raise $500 he will wear a pink bar at the walk.  So with this goal in mind the week of fundraising began.

pins and bands

First we sold bands a pins.  This fundraiser was the winner for us.  Everyone likes to get something for giving right?

Our second and last fundraiser was a bake sale.  While the proceeds were lower than we have had from past bake sales we definitely had more people bake.  Some, even decided to do a pink theme.

The good news is that we reached and even exceeded our goal!  So I was given the task of obtaining and beautifying a pink bra.  I have to say buying a bra for this purpose was kind of weird.  None of the other customers knew what it was for but still…buying a bra for your male boss…weird.

Several of the Department Heads are very enthusiastic about this and offered lots of suggestions.  In the end I decided to use feathers, gems and tassel/pendant thing (no not on each cup; just one in the center).  Let me just say I hate feathers.  They get everywhere.
