Don't worry, I have a book

Me, my thoughts and my life

Blues & Tans

on August 22, 2013

This weekend I finally finished a quilt I started in 2009.  It was originally started at the request of one of my then co-workers, but then I moved and she didn’t want it anymore.  The point being that while 4 years is a long time to finish a queen size quilt there was never any rush.

Now that my procrastination has been justified…details of the quilt!

The colors were picked by my former co-worker but I picked the actual fabric.  I think my favorite part of making quilts is drawing out the pattern and picking the colors and fabrics.  I have a pile of different drawn and colored patterns; most of which are beyond my skill level.

I finished the top fairly quickly; but had trouble deciding if I should tie it or quilt it.  Then of course I had to decide how to finish the edges.  The first time I made a split rail fence pattern was for my friend Jac.  It was fall colors, quilted and finished like a pillow.

This time I decided to tie the quilt and bind the edges.  The only problem was that I didn’t know how to bind a quilt.  My first choice of teacher was my mom but she is in Michigan so that was out.  I decided to turn to YouTube.  I found this wonderful tutorial by the Missouri Star Company.

It is wonderful!!  I made a trip to JoAnn’s and bought fabric to make the binding.  Now I apparently did not pay very good attention to the details and it took me 3 tires to get the binding right.  Good thing I have a seam ripper :P.  When I was done I had to share my triumph so I texted my mom pictures of my finished binding.

Like any good mom she was excited and proud of my “accomplishment’.  She reminded me to “sign” and date the back.  So I did.

Now I just have to decide what to do with this queen size quilt.  I also needed a new craft project so my mom mentioned that my nephew would love a couch quilt.  So, I am now making a slightly smaller version of the same quilt.  Hopefully it will be done by the time I go home in September (14 days!!!).  I think instead of binding in an off white I will use blue and may even back it in blue.  My nephew is 5 so off white is not necessarily the best color.

What I am currently reading: Today I finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and have not yet picked my next book.  Oh the choices!
